Virginia Company, London-June 1606

It is June of 1606, and you are a member of the Virginia Company which has just received a charter from King James I of England to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. Your instructions are to take 108 settlers from London to Virginia in May of 1607, and your goal is to establish an English settlement in Virginia, to find gold, and a water route to the Orient.

Your fellow shareholders have given you the task of planning, organizing, and outfitting the group for this trip. When planning the trip, remember that you have at your disposal three ships that can hold 60 persons each, but the ships must also contain all the supplies and food to sustain the group for the trip itself and for a time after arrival.

In your paper, which should be 2-3 pages in length, make sure to address the following issues:

  1. How will you plan and organize the journey?
  2. What information will you need to have about your destination? How will you find this information?
  3. What types of supplies will you need to bring along on the trip?
  4. What type of people will you need to bring along on the trip?
  5. What kind of problems and obstacles might you encounter on the trip and how are you planning to overcome these obstacles?

Make sure to support your recommendations to the Virginia Group in the form of a company memo as if you were making a presentation to the company's board of directors with valid reasons for your decisions, and to cite any reference materials you may use.

Valid sources for your research would include government, university or professional organization websites, books, magazines, newspaper articles, etc. Please do NOT use Wikipedia as a source, or cite blogs as a Reference. If you have any questions about whether or not a source is valid, please ask!

Also, please do NOT write a history of the Jamestown expedition, as we will be covering this in class. This assignment is for you to plan a similar trip without knowing anything about the Jamestown experience.

Bon Voyage!
