      Collaborative Research Project

      Aspects of China Versus Similar Topics in the Southern U.S.

              The collaborative project involves students working together in small groups (pairs or threes), writing informatively and persuasively to complete a five page essay that focuses on an aspect of Chinese culture relative to a similar topic in the southern United States.  The project has important research components, including a PowerPoint presentation of six or more slides that illustrate the essay topic and engage an audience of peers.  

              The first decisions will be to select a partner and a research topic. (If students prefer to work alone, it is permitted.) Specifically, consider how a people, literature, history, architecture, religion, sports, nature, geography, leisure activity, or cultural site of interest is similar and different from its counterpart in Georgia or the southern US.  Important places in China are the old capital city, Xian, and the new capital Beijing; other places in China are Shanghai, Tianjin, and the cities bordering Mongolia and Tibet.  Obviously, the important cities in Georgia are Atlanta and Savannah. 

              Next, narrow the focus of the research topic to reflect comparable subjects, in China and Georgia (or the southern US), and write an essay that attempts to understand the relationship between the two cultures.  For example, to write about the striking differences between Buddhist temples and Georgia churches as places of worship, explore the relative functional similarities between these representations of national and religious pride; to examine dominant beliefs in each country (religious affiliations or political systems), first define the terms, and then explain how those beliefs function in society. The discussion should point out the interesting aspects of these structures and the belief systems they represent as well as the differences between these beliefs and corresponding beliefs in the southern U.S.  To the extent that food and people’s cultural habits are relevant to a topic, explain how regional tastes originated and changed as well as how marketing and food preparation reflect culinary preferences. 

              The final component of this project includes a PPT presentation of six or more slides that accompany the essay.  If the slides link to sites on the Internet, include a list of Web addresses (where to locate the images) on the last PPT slide.

              The collaborative project requires group meetings and conversations outside of class. Take your work seriously because each partner relies on the other to complete the project.  It is each partner’s responsibility to make the group work well:  if groups approach the assignment with a spirit of inquiry, dedication, and imagination, they will be successful in making a good grade. Expect to act as a contributing and responsible member of a group and make this writing project a productive learning experience.  Each partner will assess others in the group by assigning a grade to himself/herself and to each partner’s contributions to the project.

              The idea of virtual travel to a place never seen, except through technology and research, is challenging.
