Collection Development Policy

The Bainbridge State College Library supports the mission of the institution and the changing needs of the College through its collections and services. The Library selects, acquires, and manages its collection of books, serials, electronic information resources, and other library materials to support the broad educational mission of the College and to provide its community of faculty, staff, and students with effective access to recorded information. Collection development also directly supports the University System of Georgia's instruction, research, and public service responsibilities, which include curriculum related instruction, extracurricular learning, research, and other campus educational objectives.

The process of selecting collection materials for the Bainbridge State College Library is a cooperative one: involving the librarians, faculty, staff, and students in building, maintaining, and weeding a collection that supports the instructional programs of the College and the needs of the faculty, staff, students, and local community. Faculty members are expected to make recommendations which support the courses that they teach and which supplement the general library collection, appropriate to their respective disciplines.

Ultimate responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Bainbridge State College Library collection rests with the Library Director. Selectors should be cognizant of the databases and full-text availability of resources accessible through GALILEO.

Selection Responsibility

In meeting our goal of providing high quality information services to our clientele, the Library depends on an active dialogue achieved through faculty liaison activities, contact with users at service points, and individual consultations. This is particularly important as the Library attempts to match its collections to changing user needs. Suggestions for additions to the collection are typically derived from the following sources:

  • Requests from faculty, staff, and students
  • Observations from assisting students
  • Library literature reviews
  • Subject areas frequently requested through GIL Express and Interlibrary Loan
